Global girl group TWICE has announced a firm stance against the creation and distribution of deepfake (AI-based image synthesis) videos.
JYP Entertainment issued a statement on the 30th through TWICE's official fan application, declaring their position on the matter.
JYP Entertainment stated, "We are taking the recent spread of deepfake videos targeting our artists very seriously.
" They further declared, "This is a clear illegal act," emphasizing that "we are currently gathering all relevant materials and are pursuing strong legal action with a professional law firm, with no leniency."
The agency also expressed a strong stance, stating, "We will not tolerate any actions that infringe upon our artists' rights, and we will respond firmly to the end."
Deepfake technology uses artificial intelligence (AI) to synthesize a person’s face or voice into other videos, and recently, illegal deepfake videos targeting celebrities have become a significant social issue.
Legal experts explain that the creation and distribution of deepfake videos could constitute violations of rights to one’s likeness, defamation, and breaches of the laws against sexual violence.
One lawyer noted, "The damage caused by the advancement of deepfake technology is becoming more severe, and there is an urgent need for stronger legal regulations and penalties."
Industry insiders pointed out that
"the deepfake video issue targeting idol groups is becoming more serious," and stressed that "strong action is needed, as this not only severely infringes on the rights of the artists but can also cause psychological harm to fans."
TWICE’s fans have responded positively to the agency's strong stance on social media.
One fan expressed gratitude, saying, "I appreciate the agency's efforts to protect the artists, and I hope the creators of these illegal videos face severe punishment."
This incident has sparked calls within the K-pop industry for stronger measures to protect artists.
Some are advocating for harsher legal penalties for creating and distributing deepfake videos, as well as strengthening the responsibility of platform operators.
Meanwhile, TWICE recently concluded their 'TWICE 5TH WORLD TOUR ‘READY TO BE’ in JAPAN Special' concert in Japan with great success and continues to receive immense love from global fans.
As their activities continue, there is growing industry interest in how JYP Entertainment will further protect their artists.
