Indie band Jannabi is under fire after revelations surfaced that former member Yoo Young-hyun, who left the group following a school violence scandal, had been collaborating with the band.
In response to intense backlash from fans, the band’s agency, Peponi Music, announced the termination of the collaboration and issued a public apology.
The controversy began when it was revealed that Yoo Young-hyun had been working as a sound engineer for Jannabi.
Yoo had left the band in 2019 after admitting to and apologizing for his involvement in school violence.
Once fans became aware of his involvement, they raised concerns, which led to additional controversy when some fans who voiced their objections were reportedly removed from the band’s fan café.
On November 12, Peponi Music CEO Choi Jung-joon addressed the issue on Jannabi’s fan café.
He confirmed Yoo’s role as a sound engineer, stating, “We were not trying to hide or cover this up.”
Choi added, “We intended to discuss this matter in detail once Yoo had resolved ongoing issues related to his past.”
However, as the backlash grew, CEO Choi issued a formal apology: “We have decided to cease all collaboration with Yoo Young-hyun in his role as a sound engineer.
The way this situation was handled and communicated to fans was inadequate, and our poor judgment and response have caused disappointment.”
The agency also clarified some of the rumors, denying allegations that Yoo had been involved in Jannabi’s music production or contributed to past album work.
“I apologize for attempting to bring Yoo back as a staff member in an inappropriate manner and ask for fans’ understanding.”
Music industry experts criticized the handling of the situation, noting that
“re-collaborating with a member who left the band following a school violence scandal required more careful consideration.”
They also emphasized the need for transparent and clear communication with fans.
The initial response to fans’ concerns also drew criticism.
A music critic remarked, “Removing fans who raised legitimate concerns was an inappropriate action that could damage trust between the band and its supporters.”
The controversy has reignited broader discussions about the reintegration of individuals involved in school violence scandals into the entertainment industry.
As similar cases involving entertainers attempting comebacks continue to spark debate, Jannabi’s situation highlights the complexities of this issue.
Jannabi, formed in 2014, has maintained a steady music career even after Yoo Young-hyun left the group in 2019.
The agency has vowed to improve communication with fans and ensure greater transparency in its operations, though rebuilding trust with their audience remains a critical challenge.
Industry observers believe this controversy could set new standards for addressing school violence issues and improving fan communication across the entertainment industry.
