Rookie girl group ILLIT has been nominated for the MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMA), Europe’s largest music awards, just 7 months after their debut.
This achievement is being highlighted as an example of the rapid global expansion of K-pop groups.
According to the list of nominees announced on October 8th (local time), ILLIT (Yoona, Minju, Moka, Wonhee, Iroha) has been nominated in the ‘Best Asia Act’ category.
ILLIT is the only K-pop artist in the category this year, and they have set a record as the fastest artist to be nominated for ‘Best Asia Act’ at the MTV EMA after debut.
This accomplishment is largely attributed to the global success of their first mini-album SUPER REAL ME and its title track Magnetic.
Magnetic made history as the first debut song by a K-pop group to enter the UK’s ‘Official Singles Top 100’ chart (on April 5th) and stayed on the chart for three consecutive weeks.
On the latest Billboard ‘Global 200’ chart (dated October 12th), Magnetic rose 8 spots to rank 158, while on the ‘Global Excl. US’ chart, it climbed to 90. The song also entered the Billboard ‘Hot 100’ and has remained on both charts for 28 consecutive weeks since its first appearance on April 6th.
Music industry experts are closely watching ILLIT’s rapid rise.
One insider commented, "It’s highly unusual for a group to be nominated for the MTV EMA just 7 months after debut.
Magnetic’s long-standing popularity on both the UK and U.S. charts is particularly noteworthy."
Another expert added, "ILLIT’s success demonstrates how K-pop rookie groups are adopting increasingly sophisticated strategies to enter the global market.
There is great anticipation for what further achievements they will make on the international stage."
This album tells the story of a girl who becomes completely absorbed when she meets someone she wants to get closer to, ultimately deciding to take a bold step forward.
Recently released concept photos, films, the tracklist, and track videos have already garnered significant attention from global fans.
ILLIT’s nomination for the MTV EMA is seen as another example of the ever-expanding global influence of K-pop.
Given the international attention they’ve received so early in their career, the industry is watching closely to see what position ILLIT will carve out in the K-pop scene.
There is great anticipation for how ILLIT will build on this achievement and what kind of musical growth they will show.
Fans are especially eager to see if their upcoming second mini-album I'LL LIKE YOU will further solidify ILLIT’s global influence.
